Calming Corner - 6 x Posters for Emotional Regulation
The idea behind a Calming Corner is to provide children (and adults) with a space at home or in the classroom where they can engage in calming, regulation tools.
Children may need assistance at first, but with repetition, they can go to the Calm Corner when they feel overwhelmed, angry, frustrated or overstimulated, and have access to tools to help them.
This process builds emotional intelligence and self-regulation.
Set up a designated space with a chair / pillow. You can print out the posters and stick them on the wall. You can add 3-5 calming tools into this space such as a favourite book, cuddly teddy, play dough, night light, fidget toy, colouring book etc.
Introduce the space by explaining to the child that this is a special place to calm. Show them the poster with the emotions to help them identify how they feel and what tool they want to do to help calm. They can choose for you to be with them, or they can be alone. It is helpful if this space is in a quiet area, where you can also dim the lights if necessary.
